To Celebrate Women’s History Month, MCPP and MFA Proudly Commend Supervisor Hilda Solis for Her Leadership

In recognition of Women’s History Month, the Michelson Center for Public Policy (MCPP) and the Michelson Found Animals Foundation (MFA) proudly commend Supervisor Hilda Solis for her leadership. Hilda Solis is a true leader, whose commitment to creating positive change has inspired many. Her unwavering dedication to public service and social justice is a shining example of what it means to lead with integrity and compassion.

MCPP and MFA want to thank Supervisor Hilda Solis for her recent leadership in working to reduce animal shelter euthanasia. Supervisor Solis co-introduced a motion unanimously passed by the LA County Board of Supervisors that requires the Department of Animal Care and Control (DACC) to evaluate and provide a plan of action to reduce euthanasia in shelters across the county. Supervisor Solis and her colleagues called for an analysis of the causes for euthanasia, a feasibility study to achieve a 90% live release rate of healthy animals, recommendations for expanding partnerships with rescues, fosters, and volunteers, and the critical expansion of the mobile spay and neuter program to make it more financially accessible for the nonprofit providers who provide these services

Supervisor Solis has notedly highlighted the importance of increasing access and affordability to spay/neuter and surrender prevention programs to help prevent owners from having to give up their pets due to financial hardship. Michelson Found Animals Foundation is committed to working with the County on our collective efforts to reduce euthanasia rates and increase the amount of funding and number of vouchers for spay and neuter procedures in the County.

Hilda Solis' leadership in promoting animal welfare in Los Angeles County is just one example of her commitment to social justice and public service. As the first Latina elected to the California State Senate and later the first Latina to serve in the United States Cabinet as Secretary of Labor under President Barack Obama, Solis has been a trailblazer for women and minorities in politics. Her dedication to improving the lives of underserved communities and advocating for environmental sustainability has made her a pioneer in politics, and a role model for future generations of leaders.
