California Boosts Pay For Incarcerated Firefighters
Governor Newsom signs Assembly Bill 247, boosting wages of incarcerated firefighting handcrews from $1 to $7.25 per hour during active fire
SACRAMENTO—Governor Gavin Newsom signed Assembly Bill 247 into law, boosting wages for California’s incarcerated firefighters from $1 per hour to $7.25 per hour while assigned to active wildfire incidents. The bill, authored by Assemblymember Isaac Bryan and co-sponsored by Initiate Justice Action and Anti-Recidivism Coalition (ARC), is part of the Firefighting to Freedom bill package, which aims to honor and support California’s incarcerated firefighters through legislative action.
The following is a statement from Mayra Lombera, Chief Policy Officer, Michelson Center for Public Policy:
“AB 247 marks a turning point for how California treats its incarcerated firefighters. These individuals are risking their lives to protect our communities, and Assemblymember Bryan’s stalwart support for this issue ensures that their sacrifice and dedication is honored through more than just words.”
